Discipline Saves Lives

Note in this verse the importance of disciplining children when they are very young. The author points out, correctly I can attest, that if discipline is not enforced and required at an early age children can be spoiled beyond earthly repair. It is a tragedy when parents fail to discipline their children in love, requiring them to live within behavioral boundaries. These are lessons we need throughout our lives to live as God calls us.

Proverbs 19:18

“Discipline your children while there is hope. Otherwise you will ruin their lives.”

A lost soul seeks theology lessons from JK Rowling

This ordained Episcopal pastor writing on the CNN Belief Blog doesn’t mention “Jesus” in any of her discussion in this post about Christianity. I wonder if she has met Him yet?

J.K. Rowling is a wonderful author and writer, but not a good source to turn to for theological lessons.

We live in a world filled with seekers, and even some who claim to be “found” and to have discovered “the way” remain lost. I pray each of us will find our way. Jesus is the light, and His words are the ones we should follow to find our way home.

If you don’t hear any discussion about Jesus when someone claims to be talking about Christianity and speaking for God, be suspicious. Jesus is the way. Many post-moderns would obfuscate that truth and lead us down a different path.

Each of Us Must Understand Our Times

Sometimes we may pass off important issues of the day facing the Church and our families because we think, “That’s theology our pastors will grapple with.” As believers in Christ, however, we ARE the church and the responsibility to “be the church” lies with us all. This old testament verse reminds me how important it is for each of us to be well informed, Christ-led leaders for our families and communities. We all need to understand our times and act appropriately based on that understanding.

1 Chronicles 12:32

“From the tribe of Issachar, there were 200leaders of the tribe with their relatives. All these men understood the signs of the times and knew the best course for Israel to take.”

You Have the Power

This is a great meditation on Proverbs 18:21. Our words can bring life and death.

TODAY’S WORD from Joel and Victoria Osteen

Proverbs 18:21, NIV
“The tongue has the power of life and death…”

Our words have the power to lift people up or push people down. We can say something to make others feel better about themselves or make them feel worse. It’s amazing what a simple compliment will do. When you tell someone “You look nice today,” or “Great job on that presentation at the office,” or “I really enjoy working with you,” those simple words will put a spring in their step and brighten their day. It doesn’t take much time and doesn’t cost you anything, yet with your words, you can bless their life.

That’s the power God has given each one of us. Every day we should have a goal of finding at least one person that we can encourage. Let’s be free with our compliments. Point out what somebody is doing right, not what they are doing wrong. There is already enough pushing people down. Let’s make it our business to lift people up, to brighten their day, to make them feel better about themselves. Remember, your words are seeds. When you deposit life and blessing into others, that’s what you’ll reap in your own life in return!

A PRAYER FOR TODAY

Father God, thank You for filling me with Your life-giving power. I choose to use my words to bless others and glorify You. Show me ways to sow seeds of life into others. In Jesus’ Name. Amen.

Don’t Worship 2 Gods

We are commanded to worship one God, the Lord, and not worship at a second altar. What are the altars in our culture which we are encouraged to spiritually exalt? Technology can become an altar for some. Recognition for others. The latest fashions and styles too. Temptations abound.

Do not worship at the feet of any other but the Lord Jesus, who is one with God the Father and God the Holy Spirit.

2 Kings 17:33

“And though they worshiped the Lord, they continued to follow their own gods according to the religious customs of the nations from which they came.”
