Eat Spiritual Food Daily

Jim Cymbola referenced this passage in his April 28th sermon, “Enough is Enough.” We must eat spiritual food, by reading God’s Word, on a daily basis to remain healthy. This is the same for the physical food we put into our bodies. Daily food is required.

Therefore we do not lose heart. Though outwardly we are wasting away, yet inwardly we are being renewed day by day. For our light and momentary troubles are achieving for us an eternal glory that far outweighs them all. So we fix our eyes not on what is seen, but on what is unseen, since what is seen is temporary, but what is unseen is eternal. (2 Corinthians 4:16-18 NIV)

10 ways That Jesus Surpasses Muhammad by Mateen Elass (May 2013)

These are my notes from Mateen Elass’ presentation “10 ways That Jesus Surpasses Muhammad” on May 4, 2013, at the annual Mo-Ranch Men’s Conference in Hunt, Texas. MY THOUGHTS AND COMMENTS ARE IN ALL CAPS. Matten’s blog is mateenelass.wordpress.com. Mateen is the pastor of our church (First Presbyterian Church of Edmond, Oklahoma) and will be the keynote speaker at the 2014 Mo Ranch Men’s Conference next year.

Mateen has written 3 books to date
– new book out in March 2013: “The Teachings of Jesus and Mohammad”
– looks at 60 themes between Jesus and Mohammad and how they differ

Why are you not a Muslim?
– not born into a Muslim family?
– Never been invited to the “straight path?”
– am happy I was born into a Christan home
– never had the slightest interest
– I belong to Christ, period
– Never investigated the claims of the Koran and its prophet Muhammad

How does Muhammad compare to Jesus?
– the West is just beginning to open its eyes to Islam and its claims

1 Jesus is Alive; Muhammmad is Dead
– Orthodox Muslim theology acknowledges that Jesus was take nup to heaven and presently awaits being sent back to earth (orthodox Islam agrees with this)
– Muhammad died in 632; his tomb is located in Medina. He never claimed to have power or authority over death
– Jesus claimed to be the Author of life and to hold the keys to death and Hades
– The NT record is that Jesus defeated death by dining himself and rising to life beyond death’s reach

2 Jesus was Sinless; Muhammad was a Sinner
– Though Muhammad is seen as the perfect example of humanity, the Quran makes clear that he sinned throughout his life
— “Then have patience (O Muhammad). Lo! the promise of Allah is true. And ask forgiveness for they sin and sing the praise of thy Lord at fall of night and in the early hours. (40:55) [Meccan]
— Know thou therefore that there is no god but God, and ask forgiveness for thy sin, and for the believers, men and women. (47:19) [Medinan]
— …That Allah may forgive thee thy sins of the past and the future and complete His Favour on thee, and guide thee on the Straight Path… (48:2) [Medinan]

Muslims interpret the Quran to affirm Jesus’ sinlessness:
– “And when she was delivered she said: My Lord! Lo! I am delivered of a female – Allah knew best of what she was delivered – the male is not as the female; and lo! I have named her Mary, and lo! I crave Thy protection for her and for her offspring from Satan the outcast (3:36)
– “Narrated Said bin Al-Musaiyab: Abu Huraira said, “I heard Allah’s Apostle saying, ‘There is none born among the off-spring of Adam, but Satan touches it. A child therefore, cries loudly at the time of birth because of the touch of Satan, except Mary and her child.” then Abu Huraira recited: “And I seek refuge with You for her and for her offspring from the outcast Satan” (Sahih Al-Bukhari, 4.55.641)
– this is one of 8000 traditions in addition to the Quran for Muslims
– This particular one is regarded as the most authoritative

The immaculate conception refers to Mary being conceived of a virgin birth, conceived in a way that was free from sin

– He said, “I am the messenger of your Lord, to grant you a pure son.” (19:19, see also v. 31)

The NT witness makes clear Jesus’ self-assessment, as well as that of his followers:
– “Who among you convicts me of sin?” (John 8:46)
– He committed no sin; no guile was found on his lips (1 Pet 2:22)
– 1 Jn 3:5
– 2 Cor 5:21

3 – Jesus Performed Many Miracles: Muhammad Performed None

Even according to the Quran, Jesus’ miracles were prolific:
– to be a Messenger to the Children of Israel saying, “I have come to you with a sign from your Lord. I will create for you out of clay as the likeness of a bird; then I will breathe into it, and it will be a bird, by the leave of God. I will also heal the blind and the leper, and bring to life the dead, by the leave of God. I will inform you too of what things you eat, and what you treasure up in your houses. Surely in that is a sign for you, if you are believers. (3:49)

– His birth and early life show supernatural power and work: virgin birth, speaking form the cradle
— Muslims believe in the virgin birth of Jesus and also believe he spoke from the cradle (a newborn baby Jesus stands up in his cradle and addresses a crowd criticizing his mother

Christian community doesn’t have anything written about Jesus / stories before his earthly ministry started at age 30
– we have apocryphal gospels
– that story of Jesus making a bird from mud and breathing on it, that story is also found in the Koran

MY COMMENT: THIS IS VERY INTERESTING CONSIDERING THE RESTRICTED SECTION OF THE VATICAN LIBRARY. I’VE READ AND HEARD OTHERS SUGGESTIONS

The NT of course records significantly more of Jesus’ miracles than the Quran, most notably his resurrection from the grave

Muhammad, on the other hand, is denied any miraculous abilities in the Quran
– Say: “Glory be to my Lord. Am I aught but a mortal, a Messenger?” (17:93)
– And the disbelievers say, “Why is not a sign sent down to him from his Lord? You are only a warner, and to every people there is a guide (13:7)

So God tells Mohammad “he is only a warner”

4- Jesus Claimed to be God Incarnate; Muhammad Was Only a Man
– Though the Quran asserts that Jesus, like Muhammad and all others, was only a man, it does so against the backdrop of claims to his divinity
– Hamlet: “The lady doth protest too much, methinks…”
– It (the Quran) also grants him unique titles: Word of God, Spirit from Allah, Messiah, Son of Mary
– The NT makes clear Jesus’ own divine claims, as well as those of his disciples

Mohammad continues to protest against Jesus’ divinity repeatedly

Semitic world always referred to someone as the son of their father, unless they were a bastard child and you didn’t know their father
– Mohammad spoke of Jesus as “Son of Mary” to focus on Jesus humanity, but he’s also disclosing his divine origin

As to Muhammad’s nature, the Quran makes no pretensions to anything beyond mere humanness
– He is often spoken of as Warner, Announcer, Prophet, Messenger
– Say, “I am but a man like yourselves; but it is revealed to me that your God is One God.”
– Say, “Glory be to my Lord. Am I any more than a human messenger?” What prevented the people from believing when the guidance came to them is their saying, “Did GOD send a human being as a messenger?” (17:93-94)
– To shore up his claim to be God’s final messenger, he could not allow for Jesus’ stature to outshine his (or the prior prophets.) Thus the Quran denies Jesus divine stature while asserting his uniqueness in other ways.

Hebrews says there are no more prophets because Jesus who knows the heart of the father has come

5- Jesus Honored All; Muhammad Used People for His Own Advantage
– Jesus never owned any slaves; though he never married, he honored the creation marriage covenant mandate; one man, one woman in lifelong, inviolable union
– Jesus accepted women as disciples
– Muhammad owned many slaves and traded them freely. Gave followers permission to do the same. Mulsims were free to have sex with their female slaves (“as many as their right hands possess”).
– Muhammad had somewhere between 11-14 wives
— also an unnumbered number of female salves

Though it is often claimed Mohammad raised the stature of women in Arabia, inequality between the sexes is enshrined in Islam
– In court, a woman’s testimony has half the weight of a man’s
– A female typically receives half the inheritance of her brother
– women cannot have more than one husband, though men may have up to four wives
– A husband may beat his wife if she is disobedient
– Husbands can easily diverse wives (for most minor of infractions or unhappiness)
– Women are by definition “unclean” during their menstrual periods and so cannot pray or engage in other religious acts as those times

Stories from Sahih Burhari
– 1.2.28 (story about Hell-fire who are ungrateful to their husbands for the good done to them – Mohammad saying there will be more women in hell because they are complainers)
– 1.6.301 (saying women are ‘deficient in intelligence and religion,’ testimony is worth half a man, can’t do the required rituals of Islam during their menstrual times. Islam is a religion of duty so each Muslim must do what is required each day, like prayer 5 times per day)

6 – Jesus’ Coming Fulfilled Long Line of Prophesies: Muhammad’s Didn’t
– Though Quran claims (7:157) that the Bible predicts the coming of Muhammad, none of the relatively few biblical texts put forward lives up to the claims (Dt. 18:15; John 14:16)
— discussion of paracletas
– According to the Gospels and the epistles, the life of Jesus is the culmination of the trajectory of God’s work reported in the OT. He is the fulfillment of God’s salvation-history prophecies
— Luke 24:27

Jesus is at the center of God’s purposes; Muhammad isn’t

7 – Jesus’ message was gospel; Muhammad’s message was law
– Jesus offered sinners forgiveness and restoration as the free gift of God’s love
– He taught followers to call God Father, and to sacrifice personal rights/privilege so as to serve others
— called yuma beings into personal relationship with the “I Am” by becoming incarnate
– Agape love, even for enemies
— not a quid pro quote, is willing to give itself away with no strings attached

Muhammad required his followers to keep the laws of Allah, promising that if they were faithful enough, perhaps God would show them mercy
– no assurance of forgiveness, except for those who die fighting in the way of Allah
– Islam is a system of demanding good works, field by debilitating fear of uncertainty (you never know if you’ve done enough good works)
– power and submission are the measure of life, not love and freedom
– Allah is beyond relationship and personal love (MY THOUGHT: THIS IS REALLY A BIG POINT)
– Muhammad taught ruthlessness against enemies (4.101; 48:29; 9.123; 66.9; 9.29; 47.4; 5.51; 60.13; 28.86; 2.191; 5.33

with works theology, you are always being graded

Even in the Islamic view of heaven, God is not present in heaven, he is on his throne above looking down
– opposite of Biblical view in book of Revelation, when heaven comes down and God wipes every tear from their eyes (that is the height of intimacy)

Romans 5: While we were yet sinners, Christ died for us
– if while we were enemies of God, Christ died for us, how much more

God didn’t wait till humans asked for forgiveness, God acted while we were still rebels

Muhammad ordered the massacre of 600-900 male Jewish captives from the Banu Quraizah tribe of Medina on the pretext that they broke their treaty with him
– Muslims are not apologetic at all for this story and incident, this is a story told in Muslim literature
– book “The Life of the Prophet” or “The Life of translated by Alfred Geome, a Frenchman
— written by Ibn Ishaq
— goes back to 900 AD, oldest and most authoritative biography of Mohammad, it includes this story

tradition in Islam still practiced by Muslims, you are guilty of a capital crime and will be killed (beheaded)
– that is not in Islamic law, it is an Islamic tradition

being baptized in a Christian church is the point of no return for a Muslim
– becoming an apostate

Mohammad ordered assassinations of those who had mocked or opposed him
– at least 12 were ordered or ‘wished’ by Muhammad
– upon conquering Mecca, he had 10 enemies put to death
— 3 of these were slave girls who had previously enjoyed mocking him

People of Mecca didn’t resist the tens of thousands of Muhammad’s soldiers who came to attack

8 Jesus Suffered Torture, But was Never Tortured: Muhammad Tortured but Never Suffered Torture
– crucifixion was the Roman Empire’s worst form of torture leading to execution. Jesus suffered this excruciating death to bear the since
– Jesus never used pain or torture on his enemies

Mohammad did use both pain and torture on his enemies, however.

MY THOUGHT: THAT IS WHY THE BEHAVIOR OF US SERVICEMEN IN ABU GRAHB IS SO TERRIBLE. IT REVELS THAT

Muhammad died as a result of being poisoned by a Jewess from Khaibar who had lost her father, uncle and brother to Muslim killings.
– he died as the result of a revenge killing attempt, he didn’t give his life for others

Muhammad expelled all 3 Jewish tribes which had originally lived in Medina

9 – Jesus Sent an Army of Evangelists: Muhammed Sent an Army of Soliders
– the great commission

Islam’s answer to the Great Commission might be found in Surat al-Anfal (8:39) or in the bulk of Surat al-Tauba (esp 9:29)

10 – Jesus Will come Again as Judge; Muhammad Will Answer to Him
– even Islamic tradition teachers that Jesus will return at the end of time, not Muhammad. However Jeus will not be the Eternal Judge for Muslims, because theta role is reserved for Allah
– In the apostolic and post-apostolic Church, the preferred title for Jesus was “Lord”
– the second was “judge”
– Mt 25:31-46

Conclusions
– 1.5 billion Muslims do not know these truths
– Islam is growing in part by teaching a false understanding of Christianity and Christology (this is built into the Quran)
– The frontier of Christian missions for the foreseeable future is the Muslim world
— God is on the move in this arena like never before
– We must be prepared to clearly articulate the challenge of the gospel of Jesus Christ to this system of Islam, for the salvation of 20% of the world’s present population
– You’ve now been prepared and commissioned!

There are more documented cases of Muslims being converted to Christianity in the last 30 years, since 1980, since the preceding years from 1980 to 632 AD

MY COMMENT: I AUDIO RECORDED THIS SESSION WITH MATEEN’S PERMISSION AND WILL POST IT LATER! WOW THIS WAS REALLY EYE OPENING AND IMPORTANT.

Podcast9: Discussing Urban Ministry with Shelly Fryer

This past week, I interviewed my wife about her work the past 3-4 years in urban ministry in Oklahoma City.

In addition to the Spreaker-hosted version of this podcast, I uploaded the mp3 audio file to Amazon S3 for backup. I don’t want to lose this recording, as I lost podcasts in 2009 which I’d recorded in our 5th grade Sunday School class!

[powerpress]

I also created an 8 minute screencast about how I created this, using the free app “Spreaker DJ” for iPad.

Humble yourselves and Let There be Tears

These are verses that are probably not heard very often in sermons on Sunday. This is an exhortation that is both challenging and needed, however.

So humble yourselves before God. Resist the devil, and he will flee from you. Come close to God, and God will come close to you. Wash your hands, you sinners; purify your hearts, for your loyalty is divided between God and the world. Let there be tears for what you have done. Let there be sorrow and deep grief. Let there be sadness instead of laughter, and gloom instead of joy. Humble yourselves before the Lord, and he will lift you up in honor. (James 4:7-10 NLT)

Podcast Inspiration from Philip De Courcy

Several weeks ago Philip De Courcy came to our church and shared several special messages as part of a revival weekend. Recently I was looking for some new podcasts to add to my iPhone, and found that Phillip’s weekly sermons are available free online. Today I listened to this inspiring message from 1 Thessalonians, and really enjoyed it. I highly commend it to you as well as other messages from Philip!

Do Good Works with Humility

I’m reading the book of James, and this verse from the 3rd chapter stood out for me today:

If you are wise and understand God’s ways, prove it by living an honorable life, doing good works with the humility that comes from wisdom. (James 3:13 NLT)

I pray God will open my eyes to the work He has prepared in advance for me to do this day, and He will fill me with gentleness and kindness to do that work with joy in my heart. I pray God will grant me wisdom to discern and understand His will, and serve Him by serving others with a humble spirit.

Lessons on Suicide Prevention from Rich Van Pelt

(cross-posted from Moving at the Speed of Creativity)

This evening the four eldest members of our family attended a presentation about suicide prevention by Rich Van Pelt, a church youth leader from Colorado who has authored several books on helping teens in crisis. I’m not sure how many people were present in the sanctuary at Crossings Community Church in north Oklahoma City, but I’d guess over 1000.

Attendees listening to Rich Van Pelt speaking at Crossings Community Church in OKC

Quite a few members of our church‘s youth group attended, along with parents, elders, and Sunday School teachers. Our community has experienced a series of teen suicides in the past year, and the ideas Rich shared are both timely and needed.

Rich Van Pelt speaking at Crossings Community Church in OKC

I did not have my laptop at the presentation tonight, so I used my iPhone to live-tweet it. Unfortunately I didn’t see a tweet from Crossings Church about the hashtag they’re using (#Cultivating) for this spring speaker series until after the event. I created a Storify to chronologically archive the tweets I shared from the event. Many thanks to Rich Van Pelt for sharing this information and these strategies to pro-actively address teen suicide, and thanks to Crossings Church for hosting this event for our community. Since these issues are relevant to a wide audience and not strictly theological / faith focused, I’m posting this here in addition to my Christian blog, Eyes Right.

Learn more about Rich and his ministry career serving kids in crisis in this four minute video from June 2012. His books and other support resources are available from Zondervan.

Remember Hebrews 13:20

Hebrews 13:20-21

Now may the God of peace, who through the blood of the eternal covenant brought back from the dead our Lord Jesus, that great Shepherd of the sheep, equip you with everything good for doing his will, and may he work in us what is pleasing to him, through Jesus Christ, to whom be glory for ever and ever. Amen.

More Notes from Philip DeCoursy

These are my notes from Philip DeCoursy’s evening sermon at our church today. He is a special guest pastor for a series of messages. The George Whitfield Society here in Oklahoma City brought him in and our church is hosting his sermon series.

CS Lewis warned us about the two extremes regarding prophesy
– some ignore it
– some become fanatical about it and opt out of their responsibilities in life

Loving, living, and laboring

On loving:

But concerning brotherly love you have no need that I should write to you, for you yourselves are taught by God to love one another; and indeed you do so toward all the brethren who are in all Mac-e-dōni-a. But we urge you, brethren, that you increase more and more; (I Thessalonians 4:9, 10 NKJV)

The world and the culture is marked by lust
– the church should be marked by love

Lust is selfish, it consumes, it devours, it takes and leaves nothing in its place
Love is about serving others, thinks about what is best for others
– love enriches and adds

If there is no change in someone’s life when God enters their life something strange is going on

We had two choices on going to church in my house growing up, you can go willingly or unwillingly!

You don’t need to be an identical twin to be a brother, do you?

This weekend could be a springboard

Value your faith like a Presbyterian, share your faith like a Baptist, organize your faith like a Methodist, enjoy your faith like a Pentecostal

Where love is absent it doesn’t matter what is present, where love is present it doesn’t matter what is absent

Loving and living
– love is a verb, it is deliberate action

Paul encouraged the Thessalonians to a more “rooted and responsible life”
– live a quiet life that does not neglect responsibilities here and now
– those who do the most in this life are thinking the most about the next one

Work feverishly to be at rest

But concerning brotherly love you have no need that I should write to you, for you yourselves are taught by God to love one another; and indeed you do so toward all the brethren who are in all Mac-e-dōni-a. But we urge you, brethren, that you increase more and more; that you also aspire to lead a quiet life, to mind your own business, and to work with your own hands, as we commanded you, that you may walk properly toward those who are outside, and that you may lack nothing.
I Thessalonians 4:9-12 NKJV

“The Taking of Pelham 1 2 3” movie with Denzel Washington and John Travolta
http://www.imdb.com/title/tt1111422/

The real heroes are the ones who bring home the milk to their family

With fanatics you can’t get them to change their mind or the subject

You have to avoid the temptation of going around and trying to fix everyone
– here we are talking about busybodies and people who act as a pain in the neck
– revisit your hermitology, this world IS broken and out of shape
– come to terms with the fallen condition, you can’t fix everything and God hasn’t called you to do that
– this doesn’t mean let the world go to “hell in a hand basket”
– don’t be in everyone’s business as a nuisance, this is what Paul is saying

There is vanity all around us
– in a fallen world we have a tendency to see the faults of others with greater clarity than our own

Matthew 7 message
“And why do you look at the speck in your brother’s eye, but do not consider the plank in your own eye? “Or how can you say to your brother, ‘Let me remove the speck from your eye’; and look, a plank is in your own eye? “Hypocrite! First remove the plank from your own eye, and then you will see clearly to remove the speck from your brother’s eye. (Matthew 7:3-5 NKJV)

Dwight Moody was the Billy Graham before Billy Graham

Aspire to live a quiet life

Work with your own hands

Paul says if a man doesn’t work he shouldn’t eat
– this not address those who don’t have the capacity for work
– work isn’t a 4 letter word in the bible
– certainly frustration has been added to work because of the fall
– work existed before the fall

God is presented as a craftsman or a laborer, a potter, a metalsmith

You and I are called to be good employers and good employees
– punctual and passionate in all things we do

Are you working for The Lord each day?

Forget about your wages, the raise comes later- we are all working for God! – Philip DeCoursy

Exhort bondservants to be obedient to their own masters, to be well pleasing in all things, not answering back, not pilfering, but showing all good fidelity, that they may adorn the doctrine of God our Savior in all things. (Titus 2:9, 10 NKJV)

If we can’t win the acceptance of non-believers today, lets at least win their respect
– lots of postmodern thought and beliefs today

There should be no defrauding of the church’s money

Burdens are to be shared and shouldered

Brethren, if a man is overtaken in any trespass, you who are spiritual restore such a one in a spirit of gentleness, considering yourself lest you also be tempted. Bear one another’s burdens, and so fulfill the law of Christ. For if anyone thinks himself to be something, when he is nothing, he deceives himself. But let each one examine his own work, and then he will have rejoicing in himself alone, and not in another. For each one shall bear his own load. (Galatians 6:1-5 NKJV)

Paul Powell’s book “Looking Back”

When we know Jesus is coming back we need to get urgent about loving each other

Comfort one another with these words:

“But I do not want you to be ignorant, brethren, concerning those who have fallen asleep, lest you sorrow as others who have no hope. For if we believe that Jesus died and rose again, even so God will bring with Him those who sleep in Jesus. For this we say to you by the word of the Lord, that we who are alive and remain until the coming of the Lord will by no means precede those who are asleep. For the Lord Himself will descend from heaven with a shout, with the voice of an archangel, and with the trumpet of God. And the dead in Christ will rise first. Then we who are alive and remain shall be caught up together with them in the clouds to meet the Lord in the air. And thus we shall always be with the Lord. Therefore comfort one another with these words. ”
I Thessalonians 4:13-18 NKJV
http://bible.us/114/1th.4.13.nkjv

The gospel causes Christians to approach death differently

Death is the black limousine which leads us to the gates of glory

Martin Luther left his dear 14 year old daughter, Magdalena

Christians die well in the hope of the gospel

Paul and the gospel writers were expecting Jesus to return in their lifetime

The grief, the relief, and the belief

John Piper: You can never question God, but you can ask Him questions

Get up in the morning and talk to yourself before your self talks to you

Paul challenges us to grieve within limits
– temper our grief with the knowledge that Jesus is coming again

It’s not goodbye in death, it’s only goodnight and you’ll see them in the morning

The belief aspect: We do have hope in the resurrection
But I do not want you to be ignorant, brethren, concerning those who have fallen asleep, lest you sorrow as others who have no hope. For if we believe that Jesus died and rose again, even so God will bring with Him those who sleep in Jesus.
I Thessalonians 4:13, 14 NKJV
http://bible.us/114/1th.4.13.nkjv

You can’t be a Christian and deny the bodily resurrection of Christ

Forget the Joel Olsteen’s of the world and the prosperity gospel preachers
– when you choose to follow Christ you will suffer and lose friends for Christ

John Stott: Paul had an antipathy to ignorance (theological imprecision)
– idea that “ignorance is bliss” is balderdash

Ignorance is a blight

I hope you are Bible moths, eating up scripture each day (from John Wesley)

Sound doctrine has a way of setting us at ease in the struggles of life

Rapture, resurrection and reunion

1 Corinthians 15
“Moreover, brethren, I declare to you the gospel which I preached to you, which also you received and in which you stand, by which also you are saved, if you hold fast that word which I preached to you—unless you believed in vain. For I delivered to you first of all that which I also received: that Christ died for our sins according to the Scriptures, and that He was buried, and that He rose again the third day according to the Scriptures, and that He was seen by CÄ“phas, then by the twelve. After that He was seen by over five hundred brethren at once, of whom the greater part remain to the present, but some have fallen asleep. After that He was seen by James, then by all the apostles. Then last of all He was seen by me also, as by one born out of due time. For I am the least of the apostles, who am not worthy to be called an apostle, because I persecuted the church of God. But by the grace of God I am what I am, and His grace toward me was not in vain; but I labored more abundantly than they all, yet not I, but the grace of God which was with me. Therefore, whether it was I or they, so we preach and so you believed.”

Acts 1:11
“And while they looked steadfastly toward heaven as He went up, behold, two men stood by them in white apparel, who also said, “Men of Galilee, why do you stand gazing up into heaven? Living to Please God by Philip DeCoursy

These are my notes from Philip DeCoursy’s sermon at our church this morning. He is a special guest pastor for a series of messages. The George Whitfield Society here in Oklahoma City brought him in and our church is hosting his sermon series.

We are on this earth to be the image bearer of God.

Finally then, brethren, we urge and exhort in the Lord Jesus that you should abound more and more, just as you received from us how you ought to walk and to please God; for you know what commandments we gave you through the Lord Jesus.
I Thessalonians 4:1, 2 NKJV

1- The mandate of sexual purity
– abstain from sexual immorality

God reveals His will much more than we often let on
– our problem in churches is a lack of obedience to the known will of God

Holy = set aside for a special purpose

The Gentiles live according to the passions of their lusts

Holiness involves abstaining from all forms of evil

Abstain means to make a clean cut
– not a call to moderation, it is a call to abstention

“You have heard that it was said to those of old, ‘You shall not commit adultery.’ But I say to you that whoever looks at a woman to lust for her has already committed adultery with her in his heart. If your right eye causes you to sin, pluck it out and cast it from you; for it is more profitable for you that one of your members perish, than for your whole body to be cast into hell. And if your right hand causes you to sin, cut it off and cast it from you; for it is more profitable for you that one of your members perish, than for your whole body to be cast into hell.”
Matthew 5:27-30 NKJV

“It’s easy to stop smoking. I’ve done it 1000 times.” -Mark Twain

The motivation of sexual purity

I FOUND THIS ARTICLE RELATED TO PHILIP’S STORY:

Aron Ralston article in WikiPedia

Did Climber Have to Cut Off Arm to Save Life?

Key is knowing yourself and your trigger points
– know how to possess yourself in sanctification and holiness

The world gives free reign to its passions

“Do not be confirmed to the ways of the world” (pressed into the mold of the world)

What a person believes about himself / herself forms Christian identity because that shapes behavior

Learn to possess your body

My mom would say “Remember who you are”

To take advantage of: to trespass, go beyond the boundaries of

This involves deference too:

Sexual purity is a matter of both loving God and loving our neighbor

There is nothing private about sexual sin

Is what we are doing pleasing to God and protecting to those we love?

In the OT God had a temple for his people, in the NT God has people who serve as His temple in the world

God is not keeping sex from you, he is keeping sex for you
– sex is like fire: some things are best enjoyed only within confines and limits

An Opportunity to Discuss Confession and Forgiveness

Today I learned one of our children, over a year ago, used profanity on the website “Club Penguin” and was banned for 24 hours as a result. I found this when I was checking out the “Ban History” on my Club Penguin “Parent Tools” page.

Although this happened over a year ago, when I asked for an explanation today it led to a VERY good (but also emotional on the part of the child) discussion of what happened and what lessons we could draw from this. The child in question (whose name and gender I will not reveal) hadn’t told anyone about this or discussed it, and had just been experimenting to see what would happen if a profane word was typed into Club Penguin. The child knew it was wrong and hasn’t repeated that mistake again.

I’m going to write more about this on my secular blog focused on educational technology and learning, but I wanted to write about this here to share some of the discussions we had today about confession and forgiveness. Our child said they had asked God to forgive them for this during our church service “prayers of confession,” but the emotional response and tears to this (as well as shame) told me this wasn’t something that was entirely “in the past.” This gave both my wife and I opportunities to talk with the child about what it means to confess our sins, how God is gracious to forgive us, and that means our sins are washed away and in the past.

It also led to some good discussions about sin in general, whether God knows we are going to sin, how sin entered the world, the story of Adam and Eve, etc. REALLY good conversations about many things.

I am so glad we were able to discuss this. Situations like this provide perhaps the most meaningful contexts to discuss REAL issues like sin, confession, forgiveness, grace, etc. I’m thankful for the opportunity we had today to discuss this.
